STUDENT EXCHANGES

There have been two types of student exchanges between the Norlys institutions: first, clinical practice, and secondly, intensive courses with emphasis on theoretical knowledge and research. The length of clinical practice placements varies from institution to institution, normally from 4 weeks up to 4 months or one semester. The University of Iceland mostly sends students for shorter periods sometimes only for 2-3 weeks practical training periods in specialisation studies in nursing (often express mobility). The host institutions provide students with teachers and supervisors and interaction with local students is facilitated. The host institutions arrange students' housing and provide general information about the institution, education and the health care institution where the students do their clinical practice.
The host institutions place importance on providing students with learning opportunities that are related to their current studies and field of interest. The institutions in the Norlys network are very interested in providing more opportunities for students in Bachelor's and Master's Programs to participate in clinical and theoretical exchange between the institutions. Exchange at the graduate level allows participants to work with other students in the same field of interest, and to take advanced courses that are not offered in their home country.

Why do an exchange?

Students who have done parts of their studies in a different country generally describe their experiences as interesting and educational. It is not only beneficial and eye-opening for students to witness first-hand how clinical and academic environments work in other countries (all of which have high standards in their medical practices), but it also builds professional contacts for future work.

How long can I stay?

This again varies slightly from an institution to another. It ultimately depends on how flexible your home institution is in its academic structure and how well you can manage in the native language of the visiting institution. Generally the visiting time varies from 2 weeks up to a whole semester.

Can I get grants for my exchange?

Yes, Norlys is a Norplus-funded project. All students are eligible for a travel grant and if you stay for more than a month some extra lodging grants. As the funding is limited, students with recommendations and outstanding academic qualities will have priority. However, if you do not receieve a Nordplus grant, you might still get to do the exchange at your own expense. Ask your international office for more information.

How to apply:
If you are interested in student exchange first contact the international coordinator of your college. She or he will guide you with the practical guidelines for your application. Then take a look at the institution you want to visit and follow their respective application instructions (those vary a little).

The application deadlines for exchange studies are set by your home university and vary slightly, so check with your international coordinator.  After you hand in your application, a process starts where a clinical or academic place for the student is negotiated and also there is an assessment of wheather you are eligable for a Nordplus scholarship.

If you get a placement, make sure you have all documents, tests and insurances required from your host institutions. You should also get in contact with the nursing department of your host institution prior to your arrival.
